Talent Development
“To Motivate Employees, Show Them How They’re Helping Customers”
– Francesca Gino, Harvard Business School Professor
Personal business models are the only paradigm based on the concept of value tied to the activities and skills needed in your workforce. Just as Personal Branding is the only model that illustrates the ways in which employees can enhance their value by transferring a value proposition to managers, co-workers, as well as customers, both internal and external.
By applying the key marketing and innovation concepts to business professionals, we can synchronise their work with corporate strategy and make people more self-directed and agile.
This approach is increasingly necessary in today’s business environment.
VUCA and work
We are in the VUCA era (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous), in which innovation acts without asking permission: new and uncertain competitive scenarios are emerging constantly, especially as technology becomes more intelligent every day. This situation places enormous pressure on companies that have fully embraced agile innovation methodologies. Innovation, however, also affects the professions: some of them will disappear, while others are transforming, becoming more liquid, digitized, smart, remote, and who knows what else.
The end of the “skills model”
In such a scenario, common sense suggests that everyone makes a big effort (and therefore increases the time and resources dedicated to their work) or develops their skills. While undoubtedly a necessity, this is completely useless if you do not start from the concept of value in terms of problems solved, wishes fulfilled, and other concrete activities that will help you help your customers or colleagues.
The real question all of us who work must ask ourselves is:
- not: “How do I become more visible and better at my job?”
- but: “How can I create new value?”
Today, in professional development terms, employees are expected to become agile, autonomous and self-directed. They also need to understand the needs of internal and external customers and be able to adapt their activities to satisfy them. We want staff who can interpret change, evolve constantly, and consistently create new value.
To do this, we must go beyond the skills-based models and adopt value-based models instead.
Professional Innovation
We believe this is possible, if, and only if, same strategic skills once reserved to large organizations are transferred to employees. We also believe this can happen rapidly and easily.
At BigName, we develop your staff using the methods and logic of innovation, business modeling, Personal Branding, agile methods of Design Thinking and strategic coaching. These are the only methodologies that deal with the concept of value in relation to everyone’s individual skills.
We have integrated them into a new professional development model: Professional Innovation.
